Alfaport Antwerpen defends the social and economic interests of port companies and logistics service providers in the Antwerp port area. The federation acts as the contact point and mouthpiece for the 400 or so companies that belong to its member associations, the latter being the Antwerp Shipping Federation, the Antwerp Freight Forwarding, Logistic and Work's Agents Association, the Antwerp Stevedores Association, the Royal Association of Trafficflow Controllers and the Royal Belgian Shipowners' Association. In this way Alfaport Antwerpen keeps in constant touch with developments in the port community.

Its policymakers set up workgroups in which specialists from the port companies and logistics service providers participate, bringing together their expertise on a particular subject. Through a bottom-up approach, policy positions are reached and solutions proposed to achieve efficient operation of the port. Within this process Alfaport Antwerp ensures that subjects are dealt with as broadly as possible, maintaining a very open dialogue with all parties involved.

Alfaport Antwerpen also carries out the necessary lobby work on subjects in which it is involved. This may include making representations to government and other relevant bodies, coordinating with these authorities, making sure that timetables are adhered to, consulting with those responsible for carrying out certain tasks, carrying out surveys of parties involved, ensuring a wide degree of community support, etc.
